Noisepaper Approved Movie: Beach Balls (1988)
Beach Balls is a classic 1960's "beach party" film, via unmistakable late 80's excess. That is to say that it is chock full of scattershot plot, cartoonish characters, gratuitous nudity and profanity, and above all just plain fun in the sun. Not to mention the hair-metal soundtrack courtesy of fictional band 'Severed Head in a Bag'. This is the last movie you would use as the subject of a film analysis essay, but it certainly is an exhibition of camp done right- consistently entertaining with the perfect level of self-awareness. Beach Balls is tough to beat if you're looking for some mindless, lighthearted, good times.
Beach Balls is available on Netflix NOW

Movie HYPE: Evil Dead
Release April 12, 2013
I would be lying if I said the news of the Evil Dead remake didn't have me skeptical by default, but as we get closer and closer to the release I am finding myself excited and optimistic; and frankly I cannot seem to be able to stop watching this damn trailer.
The first thing that is made obvious is that this movie is not going to have any of the slapstick humor that made Evil Dead II such a classic. Realizing that there will be no laughing taxidermy in sight is a tough pill to swallow at first, but it is necessary to remember that the original 1981 Evil Dead was a pretty straight shooting horror film. It didn't have the physical comedy or the one liners of its sequel, it was gunning for balls to the wall, no holds barred, complete over-the-top terror. Sure there are some laughable moments now, but they are the result of the nonexistent budget and dated material; hardly intentional.
That is why this remake is starting to seem very much worth looking forward to. If it picks up that same go-for-broke pursuit of being legitimately terrifying, but update it with modern effects and money to spend…this could be the movie that makes movies scary again.

Movie Review: Rock 'N' Roll High School (1979)
Yes, that says "Movie Review", and no, this is not a movie-oriented blog. However, I do feel that there is a significant overlap in art mediums, and feel it important to introduce that concept early on. …Or maybe I just felt like writing about this outrageous drive-in style flick that has more than a little to do with the greatest band to ever exist- The Ramones. Okay, that may be slightly hyperbolic (maybe), but is a fitting introduction to a film that absolutely revels in its corndog B-movie status, and as a result manages to get away with plenty of over-the-top silliness. Rock 'N' Roll High School stars P.J. Soles (better known as the "See anything you like?" girl from the original Halloween, as a fanatical Ramones fan and de-facto leader of Vince Lombardi High School, which despite the administration's best efforts, revolves around the students' youthful love of rock music. When everybody's favorite mop-haired punk rock "brothers" come to town a lot of hijinks ensue, culminating with a predictable yet satisfyingly explosive ending.
